Oral Roberts: A Remembrance

Way back in 1986, when good old Oral announced that the Almighty would rub him out if he didn’t come up with $8 million, I remember thinking that no one should send him a penny. Just imagine: if God had delivered on the threat, I would have become a believer on the spot. And so would you. And so would most of the world, I’m guessing. His ministry would never again want for followers or cash.

What a missed opportunity.

Yeah, you say that now, but it’s quite possible that you would have come up with alternative explanations for Oral’s death — suicide, coincidence, murder.

Generally, I believe miracles happen for the benefit of those who have faith, rather than as signs for those who do not.

Well, obviously, these possibilities would have to be explained away, and probably not just for a heathen like me. But even if I personally hadn’t become a believer, I’d be willing to bet millions would have. And wouldn’t that have been better for his ministry then simple money grubbing?

      Yeah? Tell that to Paul.
